"I am fairly certain that--" na-Adj.(-na)＋ はず i-Adj. (-i) ＋ はず Verb inf. ＋ はず 2) "No wonder---" "It is natural that--" 1)「はず」expresses the speaker's expectation that the proposition expressed by the sentence before "haze" should be true or come true. 2)「はず」is also used when the speaker has discovered the reason for an event or state. 3)「はず」itself is A noun. So "Sentenceはず" can modify the following noun as in the example. 田中さんへ出したはずの手紙が中田さんに届いた。 (The letter I thought I sent to Mr.Tanaka was delivered to Mr.Nakata.) 4) Negative form of "hazu" A. 彼はくるはずは（が）ない。 (Lit: There is no way (possibility) that he comes.) B. 彼は来ないはずだ。 (I am certain that he will not come.) 「はずがない」is stronger than 「ーないはず」. 5)「はず」is never used in stating what you intend to, or what you are scheduled to do. Such expressions use 「つもり」or 「ことになっている」。 × 私は、あした京都へいくはずです。 ○ 私は、あした京都へいくつもりです。 |
