“S．Levin， formerly a drunkard， after a long and tiring transcontinental journey， got off the train at Marathon， Cascadia， toward evening of the last Sunday in August， 1950．”　 （ｐ． 3）

これは、物語の書き出しの部分である。そして、主人公であるLevinの「New　Life」が始まった瞬間である。Levinは物語の中で、様々な人間と出会い、関係を持っていくことによって、様々な性格を見せている。これからそんな彼の性格にいくつか触れ、物語のテ−マについても考えていきたい。

　Levinの性格�@―『ロマンチスト』。西部に到着して間もなく、ニュ−ヨ−クにはない自然を目撃し、

“My God， the West， Levin thought． He imagined the pioneers in covered wagons entering this valley for the first time， and found it a moving thought． Although he had lived little in nature Levin had always loved it， and the sense of having done the right thing in leaving New York was renewed in him． He shuddered at his good fortune．” 　（pp． 4-5）

と感じている。また、夜になって外に出て空気に触れ、夜空に広がる星々を見つけると、　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　

“Levin　went outside with him and almost cried out． In the amazing night air he smelled the forest． Imagine getting this for nothing． He drew in a deep wavering breath as he gazed at the stars splashed over the immense dark sky．” （p． 22）

と感じている。このように物語の中で、Levinが自然を見たり、触れたりすることによって感動を覚える場面がこの他にもいくつか見られる。しかし、これは自然だけに限られたものではないようである。Gilleyが暖炉に火をおこす様子を見て、“The operation was interesting to Levin，even moving． He had rarely in his life stood at a fireplace，never before seen a fire made in one． If the room Gilley had mentioned had a fireplace he thought he would take it． （p． 11）とも感じているのである。Levinは自分が興味を示さない物事に対しては、全くといっていいほど積極的な態度を見せないのだが、自然や目新しい景色などには、よく興味を示し、そこから感じ取ることも多いようである。あと、われわれ人間にとって自然は｢癒し｣の要素も強いと私は思うのだが、Levinにもそれは当てはまるのではないだろうか。

　Levinの性格�A―『慎重』。

‘Do you play？’Gilley asked Levin．
‘Play？’
‘Golf．’
‘Oh，no．’
They drove a while in silence．
‘I hope to learn some day，’Levin said with a broken laugh．
‘Good，’said Gilley． （p． 4）

　Levinの性格�B―『ドジ』。

“The bell rang and the class moved noisily into the hall， some nearly convulsed． As if inspired， Levin glanced down at his fly and it was， as it must be， all the way open． （ｐ． 90）

“Leaving Humanities hall late one Friday afternoon， the instructor skidded on a wet leaf on the porch and his books and papers took to the air； he landed on the wet walk，whacking his head．” （p． 124）

　Levinの性格�C―『大胆』。

“He decided to go home and be done with temptation， but once in the hall he walked the wrong way． For safety’s sake he knocked first， softly， and listened to utter silence throughout the building． Levin’s legs were so wobbly he had to trek back to his office． He rested his head on his arms on the desk． Go home， he warned himselif． In the distance a church bell thinly tolled midnight． What’s the sin， he asked， in knowing the truth？ Is it ever wrong to know？ He rose from his seat at the thought and hastened down the hall， non-stop into Gilley’s office， leaving the door partly open in case he had to make a quick exit．” （p． 299）

‘The notebook，’ said Levin， ‘also contains the names of some of our colleagues who have nothing to do with Pauline or me， and who might seriously object to being spied on． I also have two notes from Leo Duffy to you．’
Tears filled her eyes． ‘You contemptible， perfectly awful person， don’t you dare show them to anyone or I’ll have you arrested．’ （p． 322）

　Levinの性格�D―『臆病』。

“He was doing twenty and considered crawling at ten but didn’t dare with this madman behind him． He tried to signal the fiend to stop with the horn， or quell him with a dirty look in the mirror， but no signals worked and he had to keep his eyes glued ahead for fear of losing the slightest sight of the perilous， tortuous road．” （pp．144-145）

　Levinの性格�E―『苛立ち・怒り』。ある時、Levinは１０ぺ−ジほどの論文を書いた。その論文をFabrikantに見せると、“‘I find this an illuminating insight and will be happy to advise where it might be sent． Am glad you have decided to publish． We sorely need that kind of thing in this institution． In the future I would hope to encourage it． CD．” （p． 267）と好感触の答えが返ってきた。それを、素直にお褒めの言葉と受け止めたLevinは、すっかり良い気分になり、Bucketにも何か意見をもらおうと論文を渡した。しかし、なかなか返答が返ってこないことに、“Levin， now greatly irritated， didn’t know what to do next．” （p． 270）と怒りを顕にしている。結局、自分の中でなぜ返答が返ってこなかったのかがわかるまで、Levinは、常に苛立ち、返答が返ってこない理由を妄想・模索するのである。ここから、素直に直接Bucketに聞くことさえもできないLevinという人間の難しさもうかがえる。

　Levinの性格�F―『教育への理想』。Levinが、西部に来て間もない頃、自分の勤める大学が、文科系の単科大学ではなく理工系の単科大学であるとわかったとき、“The liberal arts−as you know−since ancient times−have affirmed our rights and liberties． Socrates―” （p． 27）、“‘The liberal arts feed our hearts，’this old professor of mine used to say．” （p． 28）と、リベラル・ア−ツの重要性について熱く語る場面がある。私もリベラル・ア−ツは非常に重要であるという考えを持っているので、Levinの意見には納得できる。また、選挙前の時期のGilleyとLevinの会話で、Gilleyに｢英語科に対してどのような不満があるのか。｣と聞かれ、

“With reference to composition， if you’ll pardon my saying so， the course is half dead． We have to get rid of The Elements and those damn workbooks． We have to abolish the d．o． because everyone’s teaching for it and not beyond it． And we ought to introduce some literature into the course so the students know that good writing means something more than good report writing．” （p． 287）

　Levinの性格�G―『女性観』。物語の中でLevinは、さまざまな女性と出会い、そのうち何人かの女性と関係を持つ。そんな中で、Levinは、それぞれの女性について、外見や雰囲気などをみて何かしら感じ取るようである。

“She had pinned a rose to her poor chest． Why not two， he thought， one for each flat side？ Was this why the medievalist had gone to Europe， to escape the American prairie？ It did bother a bit， the observer conscious that nature had cheated where it hurt most． （中略）　　Levin guessed she was for sure a good ten years younger than her husband． He had thought that when she told him she had been Gilley’s student， but now the sense of her youth surprised him．” （p． 17）

“On a more primitive level his eye was drawn to her bosom and ungirdled behind． Whenever in her presence he found himself thinking of her as a woman， he sensed a response but wasn’t sure． （p． 128）

“He had noticed her more than once， a slim girl with short dark-brown hair， pretty， with greenish eyes， mature face， and shapely figure． （中略）　　After that she was in his mind so tenaciously it wearied him． （pp． 136-137）

　以上のように、物語から読み取れるLevinの様々な性格について見てきた。そして最後に、この物語のテ−マについて考えてみたい。私は二つほどテ−マを考えてみた。一つは、人間というものは、それぞれみんな様々な性格を持っていて、もちろん良いところも悪いところもある。そんな様々な性格が表れるのは、やはり様々な人間との関わりの中からである、ということである。もう一つは、人を愛する力の強さである。Levinは、Paulineのことを好きになることは、自分の上司の妻を好きになるということ、つまりもし関係を持ってしまったら｢不倫｣であるからだめである、と慎重に考え自分を抑止していたが、最終的にはPaulineへの愛の力がそれを許してしまうのである。また逆に、Levinが自分の将来を見つめなおし、Paulineを忘れようとしているときに、PaulineのLevinへの愛の力がPaulineにGilleyと別れて、Levinと暮らしていくことを決意させるのである。愛の力が強ければ、容易には越えることのできない壁も越えてしまうようである。Levinにとってハッピ−エンドと言えるものではないと私は思うが・・・。"A New Life"から"A New Life"へ。Levinの旅はまだまだ長そうである。
