J.D.Salingerは、この The Catcher in the Rye において主人公であるHolden Caulfildを語り手とする文体を用いた。子供でもなく、大人でもない16歳という年齢の少年Holdenを語り手とする事で、子供から大人へと成長する過程でぶつかる壁を、より繊細な角度から見つめ、読者に伝える事を可能にしたのだ。Holdenは『子供＝innocent。大人＝phony。』という図式を持ちながらも、３日間ニューヨークを彷徨い、多くの人々と出会う事で、子供から大人への成長という不回避的現象に立ち向かっていく。 彼がどのような考えや思いを経て、成長していくのかをみてみたいと思う。

    Holdenは出会う全ての子供達に共感を示し、彼らのinnocentな部分に好感を持っている。以下に幾つか例を挙げてみたいと思う。

    まず、作家である兄D.Bの短編集に出てくる子供に対しての一文。

“The best one in it was “The Secret Goldfish.” It was about this little kid that wouldn't let anybody look at his goldfish because he'd bought it with his own money. It killed me.”(p.2)

    教会から帰る途中の鼻歌を歌う男の子についての場面。

“The kid was swell. He was walking in the street, instead of on the sidewalk, but right next to the curb. He was making out like he was walking a very straight line, the way kids do, and the whole time he kept singing and humming. I got up closer so I could hear what he was singing. He was singing that song, “If a body catch a body coming through the rye.” He had a pretty little voice, too. He was just singing for the hell of it, you could tell. The cars zoomed by, brakes screeched all over the place, his parents paid no attention to him, and he kept on walking next to the curb and singing “If a body catch a body coming through the rye.” It made me feel better. It made me feel not so depressed any more.”(p.115)

    スケート靴を履いているPhoebeの友達との会話の後では、以下の様に述べている。

“God, I love it when a kid's nice and polite when you tighten their skate for them or something. Most kids are. They really are. I asked her if she'd care to have a hot chocolate or something with me, but she said no, thank you. She said she had to meet her friend. Kids always have to meet their friend. That kills me.”(p. 119)

    妹であるPhoebeとの子供のころの思い出や、自宅に忍び込みPhoebeと話をしたりする場面でも、Phoebeの無邪気さや子供らしさに“She killed me.”と好感を抱いている事が何度も表されている。

    次に、Holdenの大人に対して持っている反感についてみてみよう。 The Catcher in the Rye には、子供同様、何人もの大人達が登場する。Penceyの先生であるThurmerやSpencer、実業家Ossenburger。以前、兄D.Bと交際していたLillian Simmons、売春婦を連れてきたMauriceなどである。 Holdenは、お金や世間体しか頭にないThurmerとOssenburgerや、Mr.Spencerからの“Good luck!!”という言葉に対してphonyだと考え、強い嫌悪感を示している。

    しかし、次の文章に注目していただきたい。

“Then she left. The Navy guy and I told each other we were glad to’ve met each other. Which always kills me. I’m always saying“Glad to’ve met you.”to somebody I’m not at all glad I met. If you want to stay alive, you have to say that stuff, though.”(p. 87)

これは、兄D.Bと交際していたLillian Simmonsの連れとの別れ際のHolden の心情を表した文章である。Holdenはphonyな大人に反感を抱きながらも、『生きていく為には言いたくなくても言わなければならない事もある』とお世辞を見抜き、細かな大人の心情を読み取っている。また、彼が自ら好んで大人のフリをし、大人の世界に入りたがっている姿も見て取れるのだ。これは、彼が拒みながらも知らず知らずのうちに、大人の世界に入りかけている事を示しているように思える。16歳という年齢にも関わらず、頭の半分が白髪というHoldenの容姿は、子供の無邪気さと大人の世界の現実を合わせ持った彼の精神状態を抽象的に示している部分ではないだろうか。

    次に３つの場面から『大人になる事』に対するHoldenの心情を読み説いてみたいと思う。

    １つ目は、売春婦のSunnyが部屋を出て行った後の場面である。

“After old Sunny was gone, I sat in the chair for a while and smoked a couple of cigarettes. It was getting daylight outside. Boy, I felt miserable. I felt so depressed, you can't imagine. What I did, I started talking, sort of out loud, to Allie.”(p. 98)

    ２つ目は、Mr.Antoliniの家を飛び出した後のHoldenの心情。

“Every time I'd get to the end of a block I'd make believe I was talking to my brother Allie. I'd say to him, “Allie, don't let me disappear. Allie, don't let me disappear. Allie, don't let me disappear. Please, Allie. ”And then when I'd reach the other side of the　street without disappearing, I'd thank him.”(p.198)

    この様にHoldenは、不安な時にAllieを思い出しては気持ちを落ち着かせている。この行為から、Holdenが無邪気で落ち込む事を知らないAllieのinnocentな部分を理想だと感じている事が伺える。また幼くして亡くなり、永遠に無邪気な子供のままでいられるAllieへの憧れを示している。

    そして、３つ目は売春婦であるSunnyと、Maurice にお金を騙しとられてしまった後の場面でのHoldenの心情である。

“What I really felt like, though, was committing suicide. I felt like jumping out the window. I probably would've done it, too, if I'd been sure somebody'd cover me up as soon as I landed. I didn't want a bunch of stupid rubbernecks looking at me when I was all gory.”(p.104)

    ここでHoldenは自分の愚かさやphonyな部分を殺したい為に、『自殺』という表現を使っている。

    この様に３つの場面から、『phonyな大人になり生きていく位なら、innocentな子供のまま死んでしまいたい』というHoldenの考えが読み取れる。このままだと自分もphonyな大人になってしまうから、それを止めたい。この恐ろしい墜落へと向かう『大人になる事』への反抗心からHoldenを救い出したのは、Mr.Antolini が Holden に送った以下の言葉ではないだろうか。

“The mark of the immature man is that he wants to die nobly for a cause, while the mark of the mature man is that he wants to live humbly for one.”(p. 118)

“Anyway, I keep picturing all these little kids playing some game in this big field of rye and all. Thousands of little kids, and nobody's around - nobody big, I mean - except me. And I'm standing on the edge of some crazy cliff. What I have to do, I have to catch everybody if they start to go over the cliff - I mean if they're running and they don't look where they're going I have to come out from somewhere and catch them. That's all I'd do all day. I'd just be the catcher in the rye and all. I know it's crazy, but that's the only thing I'd really like to be. I know it's crazy.”(p. 173)

    この時点では、HoldenはPhonyな人間になってまで大人になりたくはないと思っていたし、そうなってしまう子供を１人でも多く救い出したいと願っていた。これは大人の世界を知りながらも、子供のinnocentな部分を大切に思うHoldenだからこその答えだったのではないだろうか。

    しかし、Mr.Antoliniから先程挙げた言葉を受け取ってから、Holdenの考え方は変わった。回転木馬に乗ってはしゃいでいるPhoebeを見ながら、Holdenは次のように言っている。

“All the kids kept trying to grab for the gold ring, and so was old Phoebe, and I was sort of afraid she'd fall off the the goddam horse, but I didn't say anything or do anything. The thing with kids is, if they want to grab for the gold ring, you have to let them do it, and not say anything. If they fall off, they fall off, but it's bad if you say anything to them.”

    この場面では、誰しもが子供から大人への成長を経験しなければ生きてはいけないという事を受け入れ、自分自身、前向きに成長して行こうとするHoldenの姿が描かれている場面のである。
