Fallに関して、この物語の中では2つの使われ方がある。１つは、彼の行動が失敗に終わることの予兆であり、もう１つは、彼の大人への見方であり、彼の状態である。前者が最初に現れるのは、Pency校を去る部分である。

"When I was all set to go, when I had my bags and all, I stood for a while next to the stairs and took a last look down the goddam corridor. I was sort of crying. I don't know why. I put my red hunting hat on, and turned the peak around to the back, the way I liked it, and then I yelled at the top of my goddam voice, 'sleep tight, ya morons!' I'll bet I woke up every bastard on the whole floor. Then I got the hell out. Some stupid guy had thrown peanut shells all over the stairs, and I damn near broke my crazy neck. "( J.D.Salinger The Catcher in the rye(Penguin Books) P46以下本書からの引用はページ数のみを記す。)

ここでは、寝ている寮の生徒全員を

"'Where the hellja get that hat?' Ackrey said. 'New York' I said. (中略) 'Up home we wear a hat like that to shoot deer in, for Chrissake,' Ackrey said. That's a deer shooing hat.' (中略) This is a people shooting hat. I said. ' I shoot people in this hat.' "(p19)

と言った、赤いハンティングハットをかぶりMoronと呼ぶことで、彼の友達であるAckrey、Stradrater、Spencer先生、そして生徒の親が来る土曜の晩だけステーキを出すようなPency校それ自身でありそれに対して宣戦布告をし彼らとの決別を意図しているわけだが、stupid guyと彼が呼ぶもの、つまり、彼がphonyまたは、Moronと呼ぶものによって蒔かれたピーナッツにより階段でこけてしまい首を折りそうになることから、彼らに対し威勢よく立ち向かっていくがピーナッツでこけるように、最終的には失敗してしまうことが感じられる。また、これから彼がすることが無謀で到底叶わないと言うことは、この話の最初で述べられている。

"Anyway, it was the Saturday of the football game with Saxon Hall. (中略) I remember around three o'clock that afternoon I was standing way the hell up on top of Thomson Hill, right next to this crazy cannon that was in the Revolution War and all. You could see the whole field from there, and you could see the two teams bashing each other al over the place. "(p2)

書かれているとおり、彼は、土曜日のPency校とSaxon Hall後とのフットボールの試合の応援に参加せず、試合の行われている競技場が見えるThomson Hillに立っていた。ここから、彼の恩師、Spencer先生が" 'Life is a game, boy. Life is a game that one plays according to the rules'"(p7)と言ったことを合わせて考えると、その日行われていたフットボールの試合(game)は、Spencer先生の言葉から、多くのPhonyがいるこの世の中が思い起こされ、その世界からに対して、南北戦争に使われた'crazy cannon' という頼りない武器で立ち向かう主人公の姿が想像されcrazyに表されるように、これからの行動が到底叶わず失敗に終わることが予想され、P19で彼がこけた事に失敗する事の予感を読者に更に強く与える事につながっている。

次に、この意味の'fall'が現れるのはNew Yorkでのホテルでエレベータ係のMauriceに娼婦を薦められ彼女が彼の部屋をノックし、ドアを開けにいったときにスーツケースにつまずく場面である。

"Finally, somebody knocked on the door, and when I went to open it, I had my suitcase right in the way and I fell over it and damn near broke my knee. I always pick a gorgeous time to fall over a suitcase of something. "(P84)

彼は、I’m a virgin.(p83)と言っているように童貞であり、今まで何度かそれを捨てる機会はあったのだが、女の子に「やめて」と言われると、普通の男ならそのまま続けるところをやめてしまう。彼の優しさゆえの行動であるが女の子に嫌われたくないがゆえの臆病な行動とも思える。今回はI could get in some practice on her.(p84)と思ったものの、彼女が部屋きて、She stood up and pulled her dress over her head. (P85)にあるように、服を突然脱がれたことに驚き、I felt much more depress than sexy. (P86)と感じ、やる気をなくし、そのまま何もしないまま彼女とは別れ、失敗に終わってしまう。そして、次の１４章で、’Okay,’ I said. It was against my principles and all.(P82)で言っていたように彼の信念に反する行動をした結果、Mauriceに殴られ、お金を取られてしまうのである。

このように、fallの１つの用法は彼の行動が失敗に終わることを読者に予感させるためである。

次にもう一つの’fall’の使われ方について分析していく。

このfallは、この物語のテーマに関わるものでもある。そして、このfallには、２とのとらえ方があることを先に述べておきたい。まず、１つめは、主人公Holdenの考える、fallとは、２２章で彼が妹のPhoebeに何になりたいかと聞かれて、言ったところに表れている。

" 'I thought it was “If a body catch a body,” I said. ‘Anyway I keep picturing all these little kids playing some game in this big field of rye and all. Thousands of little kids and nobody’s around ? nobody big, I mean ? except me. And I’m standing on the edge of some crazy cliff. What I have to do, I have catch everybody if they start to go over the cliff ? I mean if they’re running and they don’t look where they’re going I have to come out from somewhere and catch them. That’s all I’d do all day. I’d just be the catcher in the rye and all. I know it’s crazy. "(P156)

ライ麦畑とは、主人公を除いた大人は存在せず子供だけの純粋な世界であり、ここでは、大人になることの比喩である崖から落ちる’fall’することから守りたいといっている。すなわち、彼にとって大人に成長することはgrow up - develop from being a child to being an adult (Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English)- ではなく、fall - a situation in which someone stops being respected by other people or loses their position of authority, especially because they have done something wrong（同上）- なのである。このfallした者とは、級友のAckley, stradlater,であり、自分の演奏の腕よりも鏡で自分の顔を映しアピールするピアニストのErnie、映画スターと会うためだけにシアトルからきた３０歳くらいの女性たち、友達のSally, Carl、そして、Mr. Antoliniである。しかし、本当にかれらを嫌っているかというとそうではない。２４章で彼は言っている。

" I don’t hate too many guys. What I may do, I may hate them for a little while, like this guy Stradlater I knew at Pencey, and this other boy, Robert Ackley. I hated them once in a while ? I admit it ? but it doesn’t last too long, is what I mean. After a while, if I didn’t see them in the dining room for a couple of meals, I sort of missed them. I mean I sort of missed them. "(P168)

つまり彼は、自分の感情は一時的なものでありそれは、大人になれないがゆえの葛藤であるといえる。そして、彼がPhonyと感じるものは彼の一方的なものであり、彼自身Phonyであるという事を認めていない。彼も生きていくにはある程度のPhonyなものも必要であると言っている。

"'Glad to’ve met you’ to somebody I’m not at all glad I met.’ If you want to stay alive, you have to say that stuff, though."(P79)

そのような彼の状態、または生き方にfallのもう1つの使われ方が見られる。

大人のPhonyなを嫌っているがそれは生きていくにはある程度必要だといっている彼の現在の葛藤の状態は、Pency校に通っていた以前の学校の先生であるAntoliniによって、語られている。

" 'I have a feeling that you’re riding for some kind of a terrible, terrible fall.’(P168)

" 'This fall I think you’re riding for ? it’s a special kind of fall, a horrible kind. The man falling isn’t permitted to feel or hear himself hit bottom. He just keeps falling and falling. The whole arrangement’s designed for men who, at some time or other in their lives, were looking for something their own environment couldn’t supply them with. Or they thought their own environment couldn’t supply them with. So they gave up looking. They gave it up before they ever really even got started.’ (P169)

つまり彼は、主人公の現在の状態をライ麦畑の崖から落ちて底の無い穴の中へ落ちているのだと言っている。普通の子供なら崖から落ちても地上に落下し大人になるわけだが、彼の場合は、その地上に着地できずに、つまり、大人の世界と言うものを認められないがゆえに子供の世界と大人の世界の間に落ちそうな状態がにあると言っている。この状態にあったものは２２章に出てきた、James Castleである。彼は、級友のPhli Stableに対し、何か悪口を言いそれを撤回しろと言うPhliの言う事を聞かず、撤回する換わりに窓から飛び降り死んでしまうのである。Jamesと同じような状態にあるHoldenに対して、Mr. Antoliniは、精神分析医のWilhelm Stekelの言葉を引用している。

"The mark of the immature man is that he wants to die nobly for a cause, while the mark of the mature man is that he wants to live humbly for one.”(P169)

ここで、主人公にいる側は、immature manであり、このままでは、James Castleのように、自分の信念を貫くために死んでしまうかもしれないと言う事を暗示しているのである。そして、彼はその夜、Mr. Antoliniの言った事を考えながら眠るのである。

そして、次の日にこの、horrible fallから抜け出す事ができるのである。

それは、妹の学校に行ったときに校舎の壁に書かれた’Fuck You’と言う文字を見て消そうとするがそれは不可能だと気付いたことからである。

"I went down by a different staircase, and I saw another ‘Fuck you’ on the wall. I tried to rub it off with my hand again, but this one was scratched on, with a knife of sonehing. It wouldn’t come off. It’s hopeless, anyway. If you had a million years todo it in, you couldn’t rub out even half the ‘Fuck you’ signs in the world. It’s impossible."(P182)

この場面で彼はこの世の中には、変える事のできない不可能なものもあると割り切らなければならないことに気づき始め、彼が博物館が好きだったのは、その中のものが永遠に変わらないからであり、好きなものは何かと妹に聞かれ死んだ弟のAllieと答えたがそれは、彼が死んでいて永遠に変わらないからこそ可能なのである、それは現実の世界では無理であると気づくのである。そして、２５章の博物館の場面でミイラを見たがっていた子供と別れた後、壁に’Fuck you’と書いてありとどめを見た事により、自分の理想は不可能だと確信し、彼はライ麦畑の崖から落ち大人と子供の間の穴を越えて大人の世界に着地したのである。

" When I was coming out of the can, right before I got to the door, I sort of passed out. I was lucky, thought. I mean I could’ve killed myself when I hit the floor, but all I did was sort of land on my side. It was a funny thing, though. I felt better after I passed out. I really did. My arm sort of hurt, from when I fell, but I didn’t feel so damn dizzy any more."(P184)

体の片側を打ったものの、大人の世界に落ちて、着地した事により気分がよくなったことが分かる。そして、妹Phoebeがセントラルパークのメリーゴーランドに乗っているときに彼が考えていた事の中でそれが証明される。

" All the kids kept trying to grab for the gold ring, and so was old Phoebe, and I was sort of afraid she’d fall off the goddam horse, but I didn’t say anything or do anything. The thing with kids is, if they want to grab for the gold ring, you have to let them do it, and not say anything. If the fall off, they fall off, but it’s bad if you say any thing to them. "(P190)

彼はメリーゴーランドに乗っている子供が金の輪を取ろうとして落ちそうになっているところに、ライ麦畑の崖を重ねており、Mr.Antoliniがfallについて言ったこと、博物館や学校で見たFuck youの文字から、そして、ここでは、子供というものは、自然と大人に成長していくものであり、それは、変えられないの認めるとともに、無常観を感じているとおもわれる。

このように、fallの使われ方を見てきたが、まとめると、１つには、主人公の行動が失敗に終わることの予兆であり、もう１つは、大人の世界のとらえ方、grow up ではなく、fallとしてのライ麦畑の崖からの落下の意味、すなわち、思春期の子供の純粋な心を持ちつつも、大人へ成長せざるを得ない主人公Holden Caulfieldの精神状態をあらわしているのである。
