Adventures of Huckleberry Finnには多くの女性が登場する。ハックや他の登場人物の女性観を論じてみたいと思う。まず、この小説の中では男性、女性という性別はどのような位置付けがされているのか考えてみたい。第11章で奴隷の黒人ジムと逃亡中のハックは女の子に変装してロフタス婦人の家を訪ねる。完全に女の子に見られるように歩き方などを1日中練習し、女の子の服に慣れたハックだったが、簡単にロフタス婦人に男の子であると見破られてしまう。ロフタス婦人は、針に糸を通すやり方、物の投げ方、膝で何かを受けるやり方の三つからハックが男の子であると目星をつけた。

Bless you, child , when you set out to thread a needle , don't hold the thread still and fetch the needle up to it; hold the needles still and poke the thread at it―that's the way a woman most always does; but a man always does t'other way . And when you throw at a rat or anything, hitch yourself up a tip-toe, and fetch your hand up over your head as awkward as you can ,and miss your rat about six or seven foot . Throw stiff-armed from the shoulder , like there was a pivot there for it to turn on―like a girl; not from the wrist and elbow , with your arm out to one side , like a boy . And mind you , when a girl tries to catch anything in her lap , she throws her knees apart; she don't clap them together , the way you did when you catched the lump of lead . (p .72)

つまり着ているもの、見かけではなく、performanceで女であることを見破ったのである。仕草には男らしい仕草と女らしい仕草があるということである。生物学的に考えれば別だが、男と女にはもともと違いはないという立場をとっている。つまり社会的に作られたものがgenderであるということである。男と女はfictionであるということができる。ここでハックはロフタス婦人からgenderとはfictionであると教えられたことになる。この後、ハックは "Git up and hump yourself , Jim! There ain't a minute to lose , They are after us!"(p .72)と発言し、ジムと自分とをusと呼んだ。この発言はgenderを超えて自分達を同一視したと言う意味で重要である。作者は社会的な性、genderを重要視していたのだと思う。

この小説では女性が登場した時よくbeautiful , pretty , handsome等の形容詞が使われることが多いが、これらの表現のある部分も女性であるという外見や着ているものの他にperformance,つまり女性らしい仕草のことを指している場合が多いのではないか。例えば "So was her sister , Miss Sophia , but it was a different kind . she was gentle and sweet , like a dove , and she was only twenty ."(p .126)のlike a dove とは女性らしい仕草を指しているのではないか。次に "She was mighty red in the face , for a minute , and her eyes lighted up and it made her powerful pretty"(p .130)の部分ではred in the face が女性らしさを表しているのではないか。第22章でハックがサーカスを見て感激する場面がある。そこで "and every lady put her knuckles on her hips and every gentleman folded his arms"(p .163)という記述があり、それぞれ女らしい、男らしいperformanceをしている。"Mary Jane straightened herself up, and my, but she was handsome!"(p .183)においてはstraightened herself upが美しい女性の仕草なのだろう。"She done it, too .And she done it beautiful . She done it so beautiful it was good to hear; and I wished I could tell her a thousand lies , so she could do it again ."(p .188)ここではメアリージェーンの謝り方にいたく感動している。つまり、女性らしいということなのだろう。 "she set there , very impatient and excited and handsome"(p .198)とあるのは少し前の部分の "with a folded gown in her lap , and had her face in her hands , crying ."(p .198)がとても女性らしく、handsomeにうつったのだろう。

ここからは、この小説の中で女性の登場する場面に加えて女性についての記述を抜き出して作者は性差別主義者であるか否かを分析していきたいと思う。まず第二章においてトムソーヤたちは盗賊を組織しようとするが、女を殺すかどうか検討する場面がある。

"All right . I don't mind; but I say it's a fool way , anyhow .Say―do we kill the women , too?" "Well , Ben Rogers , if I was as ignorant as you I would't let on . Kill the women? No―nobody ever saw anything in the books like that .You fetch them to the cave , and you're always as polite as pie to them; and by and by they fall in love with you and never want to go home any more ."(p .22)

女性は殺さないと言う考えである。次に、14章のソロモン王についての記述である。妻を百万人も持っていたソロモン王は女性を軽視していると言える。ここで作者はジムにソロモン王を批判させている。

"I doan k'yer what de widder say , he ware't no wise man , nuther .He had some er de dad-fetchedes' ways I ever see. Does you know 'bout dat chile dat he 'uz gwyne to chop in two?" "Yes; the widow told me all about it ." "Well , den! Warn'dat de beatenes' notion in de worl'? You jis' take en look at it a minute . Dah's de stump , dah―dat's one er de women; heah's you―dat's de yuther one; I's Sollermun; en dishyer dollar bill's dechile . bofe un you claims it . What does I do? Does Ishin aroun' mongs' de neighbors en fine out which un you de bill do b'long to , en han' it over to de right one , all safe en soun' , de way dat anybody dat had any gumption world? No―I take en whack de bill in two , en give half un it to you , en de yuther half to de yuther woman . Dat's de way Sollermun was gwyne to do wid de chile . Now I want to ast you; what's de use er dat half a bill?― can't buy noth'n wid it . En what use is a half a chile? I would'n give a dern for a million un um ."(p .88)

18章では、亡きエメリンという少女についでの記述がある。"If Emmeline Grangerford could make poetry like that before she was fourteen , there ain't no telling what she could a done by and by ."(p .123)ここでハックはエメリンの詩をとても褒めている。続いて、

"Poor Emmeline made poetry about all the dead people when she was alive , and it didn't seem right that there warn't anybody to make some about her , now she was gone; so I tried sweat out a verse or two myself , but I couldn't seem to make it go , somehow ." (p .124)

とあるようにエメリンに同情して懸命に詩を作ろうとしている。18章でソフィア嬢という女性が登場するが、ここでもハックは彼女のことをとても心配し、同情している。"I asked him what was become of young Harney and Miss Sophia .He said they'd got across the river and was safe. I was glad of that."(p .133)次のページではソフィア嬢が死んでしまったことをとても悲しんでいる。"I wished I hadn't ever come ashore that night , to see such things . I ain't ever going to get shut of them―lots of times I dream about them ."(p .134)自分に責任があると感じてしまったハックは、

"I was mighty down-hearted; so I made up my mind I wouldn't go anear that house again , because I reckoned I was to blame , somehow . I judged that that piece of paper meant that Miss Sophia was to meet Harney somewheres at half past two and run off; and I judged I ought to told her father about that paper and the curious way she acted , and the maybe he would a locked her up and this awful mess wouldn't ever happened."(p .134)

と、待ち合わせの伝言の紙を渡すべきではなかったと心から後悔している。26章では公爵と王様と名乗る二人の悪漢に協力してメアリジェーンという女性から金を奪おうとしていたハックが考えを改める場面がある。ハックは "This is a girl that I'm letting that old reptle rob her of her money!"(p .188)と言うような科白を３回ほど繰り返した後、"My mind's made up; I'll have that money for them or bust ."(p .188)と決心する。ハックはメアリジェーンに恋心を抱いていたからだと言う見方もできるが、どんな女性であったとしてもハックはこのようにしたと思う。この小説全体を通じて、ハックはとても女性に弱い。２８章では、ハックは危険を冒してでもメアリジェーンのために本当のことを言う決意をする。

"I reckon on a body that ups and tells the truth when he is in a tight place , is taking considerable many resks; though I ain't had no experience , and can't say for certain; but it looks so to me ,anyway; and yet here's a case where I'm blest if it don't look to me like the truth is better , and actuly safer , than a lie .I must lay it by in my mind , and think it over some time or other , it's so kind of strange and unregular . I never see nothing like it . Well , I says to myself , at last , I'm going to chance it; I'll up and tell the truth this time , though it does seem most like setting down on a kag of power and touching it off , just to see where you'll go to ."(p .199)

また、"She was the best girl I ever see , and had the most sand ."(p .214)とあるようにハックはメアリジェーンをよほど気に入っている。このように、女性を褒める記述が多くあり、主人公が女性に弱く、惚れやすいことを考えると、この小説は性差別主義者が書いたものとは思えない。一見、白人男性中心の小説と読めるかもしれないが、よく読むと女性らしさを誇張しているような個所が多くあり、作者のgenderはfictionであるという女性観をよくあらわしているのではないかと思う。
