Introduction

Hot Potatoes is availabe on the Windows as well as Max OS X platform (Java Hot Potatoes). Below is the descriptions of the Windows version.

First of all, you can make two kinds of files by Hot Potatoes: html files you can read with a browser like IE and FireFox, and data files with extensions like jcl, jmx, jqz,and jmt, which correspond to the subapplications JCloze (fill-in blanks), JMix (Scramble), JQuiz (multiple-choice), JMatch (matching). Data files are to be edited by Hot Potatoe software and cannot be opened by browsers. If you upload data files to the free course management system called Moodle, however, you can read and work on the exercises and save your learning records.

If you just want to know how Hot Potatoes works, html files will do. Still, you should save data files carefully since html files can always be recovered from the corresponding data files.

Another tip is to save the content of a data file as a text file like Word. Hot Potatoes is easy to use, but since it automatically writes a lot of scripts, you sometimes cannot remove them even if you think you have done so on the Hot Potatoes editting window. In that case, I will recommned you to discard the messy data file and make a new one based on the text file.
