Each heard himself scarcely breathing.

　　"Anti-Semitic Ape."
　　Their metal glinted in hidden light, perhaps starlight filtering greenly through dense trees. Willie's eyeglass frames momentarily gleaned. They aimed at each other accurate blows. Lesser felt his jagged ax sink through bone and brain as the groaning black's razor-sharp saber, in a single boiling stabbing slash, cut the white's balls from the rest of him.
　　Each, thought the writer, feels the anguish of the other.

Week 11(12/11):The Fixer #2:

"I declare myself to be the father of Chaim, the infant son of my wife, Raisl Bok. He was conceived before she left me. Please help the mother and child, and for this, amid all my troubles, I'll be grateful.　Yakov Bok." (p. 292)

The prisoner [Yakov] clung to the wall, too burdened to speak. Then he asked, Pardoned as a criminal or pardoned as innocent? The former jurist testily said that what difference did it make so long as he was let out of prison....Yakov said he wanted a fair trial, not a pardon. If they ordered him to leave the prison without a trial they would have to shoot him first. Don't be foolish, said the former jurist, how can you co on suffering like this, caked in filth? The Fixer moved his chains restlessly. I have no choice, he said. I have just offered you one. That's no choice. (p. 294)

Week 10(11/27): A New Life #2: 1) Levin, Pauline, Gilleyのlove triangleから派生するLove Storyについて： 見知らぬ土地での独り者の孤独に耐えるLevin。同僚の女性講師Avis FLissや女子学生Nadaleeに誘惑されそうになるLevin (Nadaleeとは、彼女が待つ海岸のモーテルまでの免許取り立ての苦難に満ちた初ドライブの末、やっと結ばれる)。野鳥観察の散歩中、雨上がりの森の中で、LevinがPaulineに出会い(She took his hand and they went into the woods..."Spread your coat." She spread hers over his, then stepped out of her shoes....He was throughout conscious of the marvel of it--in the open forest, nothing less, what triumph!")、二人の不倫関係が始まる(The forest had shrunk to a double bed.")。

　　He listened in petrification.
　　"Lev, I love you. Be my love again."
　　"He muttered what of her husband.
　　"I've mad up my mind to ask for a divorce. I feel I'm entitled to my love for you. I've worn out the obligation--if it is that--of living half a life. I want to be your wife."
　　He rose hastily, upsetting the cup on the table. Levin watched the stain spreading on the rug.

　　"An older woman than yourself and not dependable, plus two adopted kids, no choice of yours, no job or promise of one, and other assorted headaches. Why take that load on yourself?" [Gilley]
　　"Because I can, you son of a bitch." [Levin]

Week 9(11/20):A New Life #1: 冒頭(時代、場所など明示したrealisticな書き出し)：
S. Levin, formerly a drunkard, after a long and tiring transcontinental journey, got off the train at Marathon, Cascadia, toward evening of the last Sunday in August, 1950. Bearded, fatigues, lonely, Levin set down a valise and suitcase and looked around in a strange land for welcome.
1950年前後、マッカーシズムが吹き荒れた時代。Marathonの駅に迎えに来たGilley夫妻と大学のある町Eascheter (Corvallis, Oregonがモデル)までドライブ。Gilley家での食事に招待される。
そこから、"pants jokes" (=Levinのズボン、パンツに関係する悲喜劇=LevinのSchlemiel/Schlimazzel的不運を象徴？)の始まり
#1 When she [Pauline] returned she served the casserole, standing. A child called from the kitchen. Dsitracted, she missed Levin's plate and dropped a hot gob of tuna fish and potato into his lap.

#2　Erik chuckled. In a minute he was laughing--to Levin's amazement--in shrieking peals. Levin snickered at his easy success, and as he did, felt something hot on his thigh....
　Levin went to the bathroom and began to wash up.
　Pauline tapped on the door. "I have a pair of Gerald's Frenchback shorts for you. You are probably damp. They ought to fit if you use the third button."
　"I don't want them." he said.
　"You'll be more comfortable."
　"No."
　She burst into tears. Levin opened the door and reached out his hand. He took from Pauline a pair of her husbands's striped shorts.
泣き出してしまったPaulineのために、Geraldのパンツとズボンをはく羽目になったLevin。今後展開する3人の三角関係の伏線。

#3 [Laverne] kicked his pants off the porch. "No, you bastard, don't ever let me see you again in your whole goddam life. Don't think those whiskers on your face hide that you ain't a man."
郊外の農場の納屋で恋敵Sadekに二人の衣服を盗まれ、半裸で(Laverneは残されたLevinのズボンと馬用の毛布、Levinはパンツのみ)夜道を歩き、やっとたどり着いたLaverneの家の前で上記のようになじられる。[Levinにとっては]ロマンチックな体験になるはずが、悲喜劇に。

#4 "This is the life for me, "he admitted, and they [students] broke into cheers, whistles, loud laughter. The bell rang and the class moved noisily into the hall, some nearly convulsed. As if inspired, Levin glanced down at his fly and it was, as it must be, all the way open.
目覚まし時計が壊れて、最初の授業に遅刻しそうになるLevinが、予想外に学生の反応が良い(彼を注視する)ので、彼の理想(Liberal Artsの意義、自由、民主主義etc.)を熱弁するが、終業ベルが鳴ったとき、学生がLevinを中止した理由を知る。
二つのテーマ：1) Levin, Pauline, Gilleyのlove triangleから派生するLove Storyと　2) 農業・林業・畜産などを学ぶ地方大学のぬるま湯的なLiberal Arts部門を新任のLevinが改革しようとするピカレスク（悪漢小説）[academic picaresque] 2)について、 Cascadia Collegeが Liberal Arts大学ではないことを知り失望するLevin。Joe BucketはLevinの良き理解者。Fairchild学科長の死。学科長選挙が告知され、面倒見のいいGilleyと学者肌のC. D. Fabrikantが有力候補。C. D.をLevinは支持しようとしていたが、Levinの前任者Leo Duffyが大学を辞めさせられる際に、C. D.がLeoを弁護しなかったことを知り、不信感を持つ。Bucketの勧めも有り、Levinが学科長に立候補。若い教員たちの支持を集めていく。ひょっとしたら、Levinが選挙に勝つかも知れないと思えてきた頃・・・

Week 8(11/13):The Assistant #3: 最後の部分(pp. 242-246)の解説。FrankがHelenのために木片から彫ったbirdとrose。Passover 「過ぎ越の祭り」初春のEaster「復活祭」とほぼ同時期に祝われる。テーマ： Father and Son = Morris と　Ephraim /Frank Malamud自身の父親との和解。"I suffer for you."の哲学、再生・復活の物語・・・Schlemiel=聖人？Frankにとってのredemption(救い)? 配布物: なし。次週の課題: 先週の配布物を予習。

Week 7(11/6):The Assistant #2:最初の章の冒頭(pp. 3-5)とその章の結末(pp. 24-27)までの解説とその後のp. 242までの展開(Frankが強盗に入ったMorrisの店の近辺に現れ、店の様子を覗う。Sam PearlのCandy Storeで雑誌にあったSt. Francisの小鳥説法の説明、貧乏であることを愛したSt. FrancisをFrankは尊敬している。やがてMorrisの食料品店で働き始め、勤勉に働き、売り上げを順調に伸ばす。反面、レジの小銭をごまかしたり、浴室のHelenを覗いたり、もする。文学好きの図書館通いをするHelenに、Frankも図書館通いを始めてアプローチ。スカーフとShakespeare全集のプレゼント。Helenが受け取りを拒否するとゴミ缶に捨ててしまい、公園で鳩にえさを与えているFrank (St. Francis)を見つけ、Helenが妥協してShakespeare全集を受け取ることにより、二人の関係が発展する。Morrisとの"I suffer for you."についての対話。MorrisとSt. Francisの生き方がFrankの中で重なってくる。真人間になろうと決心したFrankがレジからくすねたお金を返していこうと決心し、手持ちのお金を全部レジに入れた後、Frankを愛していると確信したHelenから電話があり、夜の公園で会うことを約束。やむを得ずレジから小遣い銭を盗み取るところをMorrisに見つかり、即解雇。Helenが公園に行くと、Frankは見当たらず、Wardに襲われる。危機一髪のところで、FrankがHelenを助け出す。rapeされそうになった直後のためFrankを拒否するHelenの身体を奪うFrank。Frankが欲望を満たした後、"Dog--uncircumcised dog!"と怒るHelen。ガス漏れ事故でFrankはMorrisを救うが、MorrisはFrankの復職を拒否。売り上げが落ち込み、立ちゆかなくなったとき、Wardの放火で酒屋が焼けてしまったJulius KarpがMorrisの店を買い取ることになり、一家は安堵。夜雪かきをしたMorrisが肺炎で亡くなり、Morrisの葬儀。墓穴に下ろされたMorrisの棺の上に落ちてしまうFrank。そのあとKarpの息子Louis Karpから、父が病気のため引退するので店を買うことを中止すると告げられる。直後FrankはMorrisの食料品店を無断で開けて、売り上げをIdaに見せて、店を借りて営業を開始。深夜のアルバイトもして、必死にHelenとIdaを支える。Helenは大学の夜間講座を受講するようになり、Nat Pearlと再度つき合い始める・・・)を説明。次週は、p. 242から最後まで。配布物: A New Lifeの"Main Characters"とプリント(pp. 354-355）次週の課題: 配布した"Major Characters"を読んでくること。

Week 6(10/30): The Assistant #1: 主要登場人物の名前の類似: Frank Alpine=St. Francis of Assisi；画家Giottoの"The Legend of Saint Francis" (cf. 15. Sermont to the Birds)。Frankは、San Francisco近郊の出身。Povertyを美女のように愛したSt. Francisを崇拝する。Morris Bober=Martin Buber:　名前だけでなく、MorrisとMartin Buberの哲学も似ている。"I and Thou"で、Buberは、"Iとit"の関係ではなく、"Iとyou"の関係を作ることの重要性を説く。Morrisの"I suffer for you. / You suffer for me."は、"Iとyou"の関係を彼が作ろうとしていることを示す。また、このようにやや理想化されたMorrisは、Frankが崇拝するSt. Francisとも似ている(貧しさ、誠実さ、etc.)。 配布物: The Assistantのテキスト(最初の章の最初と最後、小説の最後)次週の課題: 今日の授業で配布した、The Assistantのテキスト抜粋を予習してくること。

Week 5(10/23): The Natural#4: Gus Sands=Merlin, Iris Lemon (黒髪で赤のドレス)= the Lady of the Lake="The Great Mother"など神話的要素("...the Grail story is the archetypal fertility myth embodying, in Misss Weston's words, 'an ancient Ritual, having for its ultimate object the initiation into the secret of the sources of Life, physical and spiritual,'"--Earl R. Wasserman, "The Natural: World Ceres)。1919年のBlack Socks Scandal (Shoeless Joe Jackson "It ain't true, is it, Joe?"="Say it ain't true, Roy.")やBabe Ruth(ホームランを打つことを約束して病気の少年を救う、食べ過ぎで緊急入院しチームの危機を招く)などのMLBヒーローにまつわるエピソード。Iris Lemonから、Royは、ヒーローの役割("Without heroes we're all plain people and don't know how far we can go." p. 148)、人生の意味("We have two lives, Roy....Suffering is what brings us toward happiness." p. 152)を教えてもらうが、Irisの教え(自分の力を自分のためだけに使うのではなく他人のために使うこと、他人のためにsufferすること)を理解できない。その結果、Memo Parisにそそのかされて、Shoeless Joeのように大事な試合での八百長に同意してしまい、Wonderboyと共に破滅する。野球(MLB)はアメリカの価値観、文化の縮図：ヒーローの幼児性。経済的な成功を最優先する物質主義的価値観など。Malamud自身の自伝的要素：失われた青年時代(34歳まで夜学の非常勤教師、35歳でOregon State Collegeの英作文講師、長年完成を目指した処女小説A Light Sleeperを燃やす)。自分自身が不幸の原因を作ってしまう、ついていないSchlemiel的ヒーロー像(A schlemiel spills his soup on the schlimmazzel.) 次週の課題: The Assistantの主要登場人物を読んで来て下さい。

Week 4(10/16): The Natural#3: 本編"Batter Up!"の解説：A New Right Fielder - The Natural (2/8) Pop Fisher=Fisher King (Royが34歳で入団するthe N.Y. Knightsの監督Popは、Fisher Kingがロンギヌスの槍による傷により病弱になるように、水虫に悩まされており、the Knightsの球場は日照りが続きThe Waste Land 状態。しかし、RoyがWonderboyで活躍し始めるとPopの水虫は治り、球場にも緑の芝生がよみがえる。Royがスランプになると水虫は再発し、球場には砂埃が舞う), Memo Paris (赤毛で黒のドレス)=Morgan Le Fay in "Batter Up!", Bump Baily = Whammer (Bumpに頼まれて部屋を交換していたために、MemoがRoyを恋人のBumpと勘違いして、RoyはMemoと"fruit-ful night"を過ごす "He [Roy] thought he was still dreaming of the picture [直前に見た恋愛映画のこと] but the funny part of it was when she got into bed with him he almost cried out in pain as her icy hands and feet, in immedate embrace, slashed his hot body, but there among the apples, grapes, and melons, he found what he wanted and had it." p. 59), Gus Sands=Merlin, Iris Lemon (黒髪で赤のドレス)= the Lady of the Lake="The Great Mother"など神話的要素("...the Grail story is the archetypal fertility myth embodying, in Misss Weston's words, 'an ancient Ritual, having for its ultimate object the initiation into the secret of the sources of Life, physical and spiritual,'"--Earl R. Week 3(10/9): The Natural#2:「長いプロローグ」"Pre-Game"とThe Naturalの抜粋プリント(pp. 24-29, pp. 34-35)の解説。アメリカの現代の神話"Mojor League Basball"と"アーサー王の騎士物語神話"の融合。冒頭は、北西部の州(オレゴン？)からシカゴのMajor League球団"Cubs"の入団試験を受けに行くRoyが寝台車で明け方目覚め、長いトンネルから出るシーン。暗闇でうずくまるRoyは胎児のような姿勢をとる＝Royの誕生と幼児性("Cubs"、慣れない食堂車で数々の失敗をすること＝アーサー王伝説に登場する若い未熟な騎士 Sir Percival＝パーシヴァル卿)。田舎のカーニバル会場近くに臨時停車した列車を降りたRoyとWhammerの誇張された神話的な対決描写(p. 24, Striking Out The Whammer - The Natural (1/8))。Whammerに接近していたすでに二人の有名スポーツ選手を銃撃したHarrietが、Royをターゲットに変更し、Royに接近。RoyとWhammerの対決を"tourny"(p. 25)=tournament(=中世の騎士の馬上試合)に例える。Royの人間性・成熟度を試験するHarriet: "Had he ever read Homer?"(p. 26) or "What will you hope to accomplish, Roy?" "Is that all?" (p. 27)。batとhat (pp. 28-29)=sward (Excalibur)とchalice (Holy Grail)=male/female talisman/symbol。James Frazer->Jessie Weston->T.S. Eliot, The Waste Landで有名となった騎士物語(Holy Grail Quest)は植物のサイクル(四季の移り変わり)に対応する豊穣神話(fertility myth)という解釈。Harrietは、騎士物語の魔女 Morgan Le Fay="[good] mother ("...as if she might be his mother (That bird.)..", p. 28)と"terrible mother" (pp. 34-35)の二面性を持つ。Royの父親代わりのSamの死=父親殺し？Lake Michiganのほとりにあるホテルの一室で、HarrietはRoyを拳銃で撃つ。倒れたRoyのそばで、彼女は、"...and she, making muted noieses of triumph [terrible mother] and despair [good mother]..."踊る(p. 35)。この事件は、1949年に起きた Eddie Waitkus事件が元ネタ。本編"Batter Up"に登場するIris Lemon= the Lady of the Lake"は"good mother" ("fertility goddess"="the Great Mother")の代表。 次週の課題: The Naturalの抜粋プリント(pp. 146-157)を読んで来てください。

Week 2(10/2): The Natural#1: ビデオクリップを利用したThe Naturalのあらすじ解説。ビデオクリップ：Striking Out The Whammer - The Natural (1/8), A New Right Fielder - The Natural (2/8), Batting Practice With Wonderboy - The Natural (3/8), Knock the Cover Off the Ball - The Natural (4/8), The Lady in White - The Natural (5/8), Let it Ride - The Natural (6/8), Savoy Special - The Natural (7/8), The Final Homerun - The Natural (8/8)配布物: The Naturalの主要登場人物のプリントとThe Naturalの抜粋プリント(pp. 24-29, pp. 34-35, pp. 146-157)次週の課題: The Naturalの抜粋プリント(pp. 24-29, pp. 34-35, pp. 146-157)を読んで来て、3つの場面がどの場面か考えてくること。

Week 1(9/25): プリント("Chronology of Bernard Malamud")配布。授業概要と評価方法などの説明。Malamudの略歴解説とMalamud聖地巡り写真展。次週の課題: 配布されたプリントとThe Naturalの主要登場人物を読んで来て下さい。
