Week #2 (April 18, 2000)

Have you been able to post your message on Dave's ESL Cafe?  It seems that the Student E-mail Connection at Dave's is not working properly this year because of some people who post their unreadable messages again and again.  You had better take it for granted that your message stays on the board only about a day.  You need to check the E-mail Connection board frequently, preferably every day, and post your message when your previous one is gone.

So what you are going to do today for the first thing is to post your message again on the E-mail connection.  Then, you will write e-mail messages to some people you have selected on the E-Mail Connection.

1) Post your message again on the E-mail Connection board at Dave's ESL Cafe.   For registration click here.  If you press the "View List" button on the page, you can see how other people upload their messages.

  1. Open Hidemaru ("Start" button at the lower left corner of the desktop - Select "Program" - Click on "Hidemaru") and write a message for the E-Mail Connection.

  2. Click here and fill in the blanks of "E-mail Connection" registration page. You are supposed to fill in "Name" (Just your first name will do), your e-mail address (like g0123456@for.dokkyo.ac.jp) in "E-mail", "Your homepage URL" if you have your own homepage, and "You come from" (Click on the inverted black triangle and select "Japan" in the list).

  3. Paste the Hidemaru message on the "Enter message here:" box of the registration page. Below is the instruction how to "paste" the message:

    1. Make sure the Hidemaru you have written the message is on top of the desktop.
    2. Click on "Edit" of the Hidemaru menu and select "Select all" command. [You can "select all" by pressing "Alt" key and type "e" and "a."]  The message will be darkened or "highlighted."
    3. Press the "F8" key (a function key on top of the keyboard). "F8" is a "copy" command key for Hidemaru.  [Pressing "Ctrl" key plus "c" is also for copying.]
    4. Now click on the "Enter message here:" box of the registration page.
    5. Press the right button of your mouse and select "Paste" or "Haritsuke" from the short cut menu.  [Pressing "Ctrl" key plus "v" is also for pasting.]  You will find your message pasted in the "Enter message here:" box.
  4. Press the "sign it!" button just once.

  5. Press the "view list" button and confirm your message.

  6. Type "E-mail Connection 000418" on top of the Hidemaru message.

  7. Save the Hidemaru message as "dave000418.txt" in your floppy disk.

Be sure to bring a 2HD floppy disk to your class.  Be sure to format your disk if it is not yet formatted.  If you do not know how to format your disk, click here.

If you forget to bring a floppy disk, save the file in M: (eawase...) drive.

2)  Now let's send a message to a person listed on E-Mail Connection.

  1. Click on the E-Mail Connection and select a person you would like to send a message to.

  2. Open Hidemaru ("Start" button at the lower left corner of the desktop - Select "Program" - Click on "Hidemaru") and write a message to the person you have selected.

  3. After you finish writing the message, open Eudora and and open a new mail.  [Create a new mail.]  Enter the mail address of the person you have selected in the To:  column.

  4. Paste the Hidemaru message on the new e-mail of Eudora.

    4. Now click on the content box of the new mail.
    5. Press the right button of your mouse and select "Paste" or "Haritsuke" from the short cut menu.  [Pressing "Ctrl" key plus "v" is also for pasting.]  You will find your message pasted on the new mail.
  5. Press the "send" button of the new mail on the Eudora.

  6. Type "the person's name [e.g. "Kim"] 000418" on top of the Hidemaru message.

  7. Save the Hidemaru message as "kim000418.txt" in your floppy disk.

  8. When you finish, repeat the above 1 to 7 and send a message to another person on the E-Mail Connection.

3) Today's assignment: Opening Eudora, send me at shimada@dokkyo.ac.jp  the email on which is pasted the contents of "dave000418.txt" and "kim000418.txt"(s).   How to do this is explained below:

  1. Create a new mail on the Eudora.  Enter shimada@dokkyo.ac.jp in the To: column.  Enter "w2" in the "Subject:" column.  Enter lect0021@dokkyo.ac.jp in the Cc: column.

  2. Open "dave000418.txt" and "kim000418.txt"(s) by "Hidemaru."  You can open them by opening the "File" menu of the "Hidemaru" and choosing the filenames at the bottom of the menu.  [You might as well do this using "My Computer" or "Explorer."  Find the files by either one of them by choosing A: drive (M: drive, if you have saved the files there).  When you find the files, you simply double click on them.]

  3. Select all the content of   "dave000418.txt" as described in 1) and 2) above.  [i.e. 3-2 or 4-2.]

  4. Execute a Copy command as described in 1) and 2) above.  [3-3 or 4-3]

  5. Now you must order your PC where to paste it as described in 2) above.  [4-4]

  6. Execute a Paste command as described in   2) above.  [4-5]  Now, you have pasted your first message on the e-mail to me.

  7. Select all the content of "kim000418.txt" and repeat the above 4-6.

  8. When you finish pasting all the messages you wrote today, press the "send" button on tope of the new mail to me.
