Week #7 (May 23,
2000)
I would like you to send me a mid-term
"e-mail" report as an html file by next Monday. When you
attach "your-last-name.htm" file, be sure to fill in the "Subject:" as
"w7-your student number" as in "w7-98123456."
What you have to do actually is revise your
"your-last-name.htm" file most of you have already made and just add a
brief introduction of your e-mail friends on top of the e-mail record. Be
sure to include your own reply messages in the e-mail record. (I noticed
that some of you do not do this in the present "your last name.htm".) So,
technically, you can already do this on your own if you have done the previous
assignments. Some of you, however, seem to have trouble with
"Hidemaru" and "html", let's review what we have learned so far.
1) Although it is not really related to the
revision of "your last name.htm" file, I would like all of you to finish the
second assignment of the last week so that you can understand "html" better.
Below is the assignment:
Create "html", "gifs",
"others", "comp98", and "images" folders as shown in
the picture below:
Find your latest "your-last-name.htm" file
in your floppy disk and copy it in the "comp98" folder just as the
"ht980508.htm" file as shown in the above.
Click
here and open a new Netscape.
Point one of the "red ball" images on the
new Netscape and click on the right button of your mouse to open a shortcut menu.
Choose "Save Image As" from the shortcut
menu. A small window will open asking you where to save the file. Find the
"gifs" folder in your floppy disk. After selecting it, save the
"redbal3.gif" file there.
Point one of the "blue ball" images and
save the "bluebal3.gif" file in the "gifs" folder.
Now you are going to save the background image file.
Place the cursor where nothing is written and click on the right button.
Choose "Save Background As" from the shortcut menu. Save the
"parchmnt.gif" in the "images" folder.
Double click on the "your last name.htm" in
the "comp98" folder and see how it looks like on the Netscape. You will
notice that it looks exactly the same as your "your last name.htm" on the web.
As I will explain why this happened, click here to see the example html
file.
2) As I am going to explain about basic
"html" tags, again click here. If you would
like to know more about it, click here.
3) There are a lot of ways to revise your "your
last name.htm" file. I will show you rough procedures of one of them.
Open "Hidemaru" and drag and drop your
latest "your last name.htm" file.
Open another "Hidemaru" and copy new e-mail
message from the Eudora to it. When you finish copying all the new messages, save
the "Hidemaru" file. The file name can be just anything but be sure to add
".txt" after the file name. Example: shimada.txt
Select all the content of the "Hidemaru"
file you have just saved. Copy it to "your last name.htm" on the
"Hidemaru" you have already opened in #1.
Since the added part has no line breaks, add
<br>'s on the "Hidemaru" using F8 and F9 keys.
Save the "your last name.htm" file when you
finish adding <br>'s.
If your present "your last name.htm" file is
not good enough, you might as well create a new "your last name.htm" file.
When you do so, I advise you to make a new text file with "Hidemaru"
which has all the e-mail record, instead of copying e-mail messages directly from the
Eudora to the "your last name.htm" file. To create a new, the following
will be a typical example:
Open "Hidemaru" and drag and drop
"ht980508.htm" file and save the file as "your last name.htm".
(e.g.: shimada.htm)
Open another "Hidemaru" and copy all the
e-mail message from the Eudora to it. When you finish copying them, save the
"Hidemaru" file. The file name can be just anything but be sure to add
".txt" after the file name. Example: shimada.txt
Select all the content of the "Hidemaru"
file you have just saved. Copy it to "your last name.htm" on the
"Hidemaru" you have already opened in #1.
Since the e-mail messages has no line breaks, add
<br>'s on the "Hidemaru" using F8 and F9 keys.
Using "search and replace" function of the
"Hidemaru" make necessary changes. (Refer to Week #6.)
Save the "your last name.htm" file when you
finish.
