Week #15 (October 3, 2000)
Last week we learned how to use "Yahoo!" This
week we will learn how to use Alta
Vista, another famous search engine.
Go to the Alta Vista homepage
and click on the "help" on top of the page. Read the help page.
Return to the Alta Vista homepage
by clicking on the "search" on the top of the help page.
Word search: Fill in the "search
box" of Alta Vista--Keiichi Shimada--and see the result.
Phrase search: Fill in the "search
box"--"Keiichi Shimada"--and see the result.
Try your name this time. First without
quotation marks, and then with quotation marks.
Now find "Dave's ESL Cafe" by Alta
Vista. You may try natural language querries such as "Where
can I find Dave's ESL Cafe?" or "Find ESL web pages".
Last week we learned how to use
"bookmarks". This week we will learn how to record the sites you visited
on an html file.
First, be sure to check your e-mail box and
see if you have received my "bookmark" mail.
As is written in my mail, copy
"bookmark.htm" to "Eawase/bin" folder.
Open the "bookmark.htm" file in
the bin folder with Hidemaru. Read the direction.
Open Dokkyo Homepage in Japanese and copy
the URL (i.e. "http://www.dokkyo.ac.jp/jp/"
) on the Netscape by clicking on the right button of the mouse. Then paste it
at the directed place on the Hidemaru "bookmark.htm".
Now go to the Composition Homepage with the
Netscape. Copy the URL (i.e. "http://www2.dokkyo.ac.jp/~esemi006/others/comp.htm")
and paste it on the Hidemaru "bookmark.htm" as directed above.
Save the "bookmark.htm" on the
Hidemaru and open it with the Netscape. See if the links you have just created work.
Add the "Yahoo!" and "Alta
Vista" links to your "bookmark.htm".
This Week's Assignment: Send me your "bookmark.htm" file after adding a few more links. Be sure to change the file name as "your-last-name.htm" (i.e. not as "bookmark.htm" but as "shimada.htm" -- in my case) before sending it to me.
Start your netsurfing using
"Yahoo!" and "Alta Vista" and make a plan for the second semester
project.
